  • Complete each tier in order. Tier 1 must be completed before Tier 2, and Tier 2 must be completed before Tier 3.

What is whisk(e)y?

Whiskey is a distilled alcohol made from grain and fermented with malted barley, rye and other grains. The distillate is aged in oak barrels where it matures and becomes whiskey. Taste varies based on grain type, distillation method, and barrel aging.

What is bourbon?

All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. Bourbon must be made in the US, contain at least 51% corn, age in new American oak barrels, be distilled to no more than 160 proof, enter the barrel at 125 proof, be bottled at no less than 80 proof, and have no added flavoring, coloring, or additives.

What is scotch?

Scotch whisky must be made in Scotland, use a pot still distillation process, be made with only malted barley, and be aged at least 3 years in oak casks. Scotch is produced in regions including Lowland, Highland, Speyside, and Islay.

What is rye?

In the US, rye whiskey must be made from at least 51% rye mash. In Canada, rye whiskey may only need a little rye in the mash to be called rye whiskey.

What is Tennessee whiskey?

Tennessee whiskey is basically bourbon made in Tennessee. The main difference is the maple charcoal finishing process, which is considered an additive.

What is Irish whiskey?

Irish whiskey must be distilled in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland, be distilled to an ABV of less than 94.8%, and age in wooden casks for 3 years to be called Irish whiskey.
